What to Expect

  • Your lessons for the first few weeks will last 1 hour and will take place with a senior black belt instructor in a separate beginners only class.

  • You will learn the basic skills, techniques and etiquette of Shotokan Karate, in a
    structured and controlled environment.

  • After your first 3 months, you will take your first grading examination. At this point, you will progress to the intermediate class with your fellow colour belts.

> When is training?

For beginners, training is twice a week and takes place on Mondays & Fridays (6:30 pm - 8:00 pm).

> Do I need to buy a karate suit?

You will only need to purchase a Karate suit when it’s time to take your first grading – until then loose clothing is perfectly acceptable.

> Am I too old?

No. You can begin training at any age.

> Is karate suitable for women?

Yes, it most certainly is. Both women and men can benefit equally from karate training.

> Do I need to be fit before I start?

No. Karate training promotes fitness and good health. You start slowly and build up your fitness level.

> What does it cost?

Adult sessions are £6.00

Lifetime club membership £10 (adults).

Note - Before your first grading you must be licensed by the national governing body - currently £25 per year.

> How long does it take to reach black belt?

About 4 years of training regularly two or three times a week - don't believe anyone who says it can be done in much less time than this. There is no quick fix.
